Due to the available budget allocated for this position, the hiring rate will not exceed $32.99 per hour.
Why does the job exist?

This Probation Parole Officer position will coordinate the assignment and investigation of parole plans as well as the review of re-entry halfway house pre-applications for inmates who are nearing release to the community on probation and parole supervision. This position will also work in collaboration with supervising Probation Officers to provide resources to offenders such as referrals to programs, employment training, substance abuse treatment, mental health care, educational resources, transportation, food, clothing, and ancillary services that promote successful integration and reintegration into community life. This officer will work with inmates and facility case managers to ensure a seamless transition from custody to the community.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert in a specific area of evidence based practice such as motivational interviewing, assessment, or transition planning; provide direct cognitive programming to an offender population.
  • May represent the agency at meetings, on special task force initiatives and make presentations to outside agencies.
  • Provides referral to community resources and treatment.
  • Develop specialized supervision and treatment plans for offenders with special needs.

Minimum Qualification

Associate Degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related field as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification and two (2) years of experience as a Probation and Parole Officer, commissioned or non-commissioned law enforcement officer, to include behavioral case management. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and experience in behavioral case management, commissioned or non-commissioned law enforcement, military law enforcement or as a Probation and Parole Officer totaling four (4) years, OR two (2) years as an Adult Correctional Officer, OR two (2) years in behavioral case management, OR two (2) years of probation and parole office management or administration will substitute for the required education.
Employment Requirements

This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of Federal and State law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Successful completion of a series of Defensive Tactics and Restraint Courses to include exposure to Mace/OC Spray within one (1) year from date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Successful completion of First Aid and CPR Courses within the one (1) year of date from hire as a condition of continued employment is required. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must be a U.S. Citizen, reached the age of 18 years old, and must not have been convicted of a felony. Must have home phone. Willing to accept travel/geographic assignment changes. May be required to carry a firearm, work odd hours and visit offenders' home. Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug tests. Employment is conditional pending results of pre-employment drug test.

Assignment as a Probation Parole Officer at NMCD must adhere to the following:

  • At the time of their appointment, be citizens of the United States.
  • At the time of their appointment, have reached the age of majority.
  • Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony or any crime of moral turpitude in the courts of this or any other state or in the federal courts.
  • Subject to a drug test as a condition of employment and on-going random drug testing as a condition of assignment to a safety sensitive position.
  • Successful completion of the New Mexico Department Of Corrections Basic Probation and Parole Officers Certification Training within twelve months of hire and annual re-certification.
  • Maintenance of skills in self-defense, handcuffing, baton, and chemical agents and annual re-certification.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an adult prison environment, and field setting which includes daily contact with and supervision of adult offenders and or inmates. May be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
